Much of our work addresses a ‘problem’ faced by a manufacturer. In this case, the safe and efficient disposal of old carpets and surplus carpet material is an environmental problem for the UK carpet industry. Approximately 500,000 tonnes of end-of-life carpet are produced in the UK every year. The majority is currently either burnt for energy or sent to landfill. If sent to a landfill site, the synthetic materials used in carpets can take thousands of years to decompose and contributes significantly to global warming.
Our customer is a UK based manufacturer of recycled polypropylene, which can be extracted from end-of-life carpet. They have created a process that provides a more sustainable solution. It handles 12 tonnes of carpet material a day now and produces reclaimed polypropylene fibre and pellets for use in a wide range of products and manufacturing industries.
Vogal Group managed this turnkey M&E project, removed old systems from the building, reconditioned the building interior including fitting a fully compliant electrical installation (new transformers, extractor units, distribution boards and lighting) and machinery relocation and installation. As this was a new process for the UK, we worked closely with international suppliers to source the new machinery before we installed them. Our team also completed the pipework installations including compressed air, chilled water and domestic hot water pipework.
