A long-standing food sector customer tasked us with replacing the Metso mechanical seal on an industrial rotary dryer. The asset is used to reduce the moisture content of the product being handled. The seal was leaking, resulting in lost energy, higher heating costs and process inefficiency. We had replaced these type of seals before, but the replacement was a new design seal assembly (first of its kind) that we had not encountered before, so there was an opportunity for us to add to our knowledge with this mechanical installation work.
Our previous experience, with similar installations, allowed us to respond quickly to the initial enquiry. We liaised with the customer’s operations and engineering stakeholders and prepared the work area to reduce the impact on production once work started. We supplied the new seal, removed the existing assembly and the stone catcher from the rotary dryer, dealt with some supply delays and then installed the new seal assembly. Once our work was complete Metso attended site to inspect and commission the new seal assembly.
